r teeth trying not to involuntarily poop. Now there a machine to answer for you. Pain communication is actually a pretty big stumbling block in medicine. The only way for doctors to get the information they need is to poke you or watch you squirm and then ask you about how it feels. Not the most efficient process in the world. Now researchers at Stanford have come up with a new method that takes scans of patients ; brains to determine whether they ;re in pain, and to what degree. It still early in the development stages, but in the initial study, the machine was correct 81% of the time determining whether a heat stimulus was warm or painfully hot. That ;ll have to get better, obviously, but it a start. And the real upshot, beyond maybe getting rid of those annoying questions, will be to see if patients who can ;t communicate with doctors are in pain. The downside It ;ll be a heck of a lot harder to haggle ab

Until that Missile Defense Shield I ;ve heard so much about is realized, we ;ll just have to rely on this megawatt laser mounted on the front of a Boeing to blast warheads out of the sky. Works for me The Airborne Laser Test Bed is an experimental system being developed by the Department of Defense, combining a high-energy Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser COIL with a Boeing 747 aircraft for shooting down missiles while they are still launching. The ABLTB first employs

six infrared sensors to scan for and detect the exhaust plume of a boosting missile. Then, three low-power tracking lasers calculate the projectile course, speed and target. After that, a kilowatt solid state laser known as the Track Illuminator determines a precise point for the laser to aim for. Then the Be

isturbances reduce the primary laser effectiveness鈥攁nd corrects for it using an adaptive optics system. This entire process takes less than 12 seconds. The primary COIL laser, the one that does the frying, is focused by the beam control system mounted on the plane nose cone. The COIL is made from six interconnected, 6,500 pound modules鈥攅ach roughly the size of an SUV. The laser is so large that a five second burst could power an American home for an hour, yet it doesn ;t actually burn through the missile. Instead, it subtly heats the missile skin which weaken
